Walk Through a Living Painting

Prepare to be transported into the world of Impressionism at Claude Monet's Giverny. More than just a garden, this is a living, breathing canvas that the artist himself designed and cultivated for over four decades. A visit here is a journey through two distinct yet equally magical realms. First, wander through the Clos Normand, a dazzling flower garden in front of the house, where vibrant tulips, irises, peonies, and roses erupt in a symphony of color, meticulously arranged for painterly effect. Then, cross under the road to discover the legendary Water Garden, a world of reflection and tranquility. Here you'll find the iconic Japanese bridge draped in wisteria, surrounded by weeping willows and bamboo, and the famous pond where Monet's beloved water lilies bloom. It’s an unforgettable experience to stand in the very spot that inspired one of art history's most revolutionary series of paintings.

  • Consider a combination ticket that includes the Musée des Impressionnismes Giverny, which is just a short walk away
  • If traveling from Paris without a car, booking a tour that includes round-trip bus or train transport is the most convenient and stress-free option.

  • A camera with a fully charged battery and extra memory card
  • A light raincoat or travel umbrella
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses for sunny days
  • A water bottle to stay hydrated

Best Seasons to Visit

Late Spring (May to June) is arguably the most spectacular time, with the gardens in full bloom, the wisteria draping the Japanese bridge in purple, and pleasant weather. Early Autumn (September to early October) is another excellent choice, offering beautiful fall colors, impressive dahlia displays, and generally smaller crowds than the peak summer months of July and August.

What to Wear

Wear layers of clothing, as Normandy's weather can change quickly from sun to rain|A light waterproof jacket or a small umbrella is always a good idea|Comfortable walking shoes are essential, as you will be on your feet for several hours and the paths are mostly gravel|Bring a sunhat and sunglasses for sunny days, as there is limited shade in the Clos Normand.

Planning

Historical Context

Claude Monet lived in Giverny from 1883 until his death in 1926. When he first arrived, the land in front of the house was a simple orchard and vegetable patch, which he transformed into the magnificent, color-filled Clos Normand. In 1893, he bought an adjacent piece of land across the railway line and, after a long battle with reluctant local authorities, received permission to divert the Ru river to create the water lily pond. This Water Garden, with its Japanese-inspired bridge and exotic plants, would become his primary obsession and the subject of his art for the last 30 years of his life.

Photography Tips

  • An overcast day is your best friend; the soft, diffused light prevents harsh shadows and brings out the rich colors of the flowers
  • Use a polarizing filter to reduce glare on the pond's surface, making the water lilies and reflections pop
  • Don't just shoot wide landscapes; focus on details like the texture of a petal, a bee on a flower, or the reflection of the bridge
  • To get photos of the Japanese bridge with fewer people, be patient and wait for a gap between groups, or try shooting from the far ends of the pond.

Insider Tips

  • Arrive 15-20 minutes before your timed-entry slot
  • Most tour groups start with the house or the Clos Normand; start with the Water Garden to get ahead of them
  • After visiting the gardens, take a short walk to the Church of Saint-Radegonde to see Monet's final resting place
  • The gift shop is located in Monet's third and largest studio, so you are literally standing in his workspace as you browse
  • Visit the Musée des Impressionnismes next door to see works by Monet's contemporaries and understand the broader art movement.

Literally a Living Painting!

Booking through this site was so easy. We got our skip-the-line tickets instantly and walked right past a huge queue. The gardens are more beautiful than any photo can capture. The Water Garden is pure magic, and seeing the Japanese bridge covered in wisteria was a dream. Worth every euro to avoid the wait!

A wonderful day trip from Paris.

We booked a tour that included bus transport from Paris. It made the whole day effortless. Giverny in September was stunning, with so many dahlias and autumnal colors. The house was crowded, but it's fascinating to see where Monet lived and worked. The gardens are the real star. A must-do for any art lover.

Magique, même pour une locale!

As someone living in Normandy, I've been many times, but this was my first time booking a timed entry online. What a difference! We went on a Tuesday morning and it felt so peaceful. The Clos Normand was an explosion of color. Seeing the inspiration for the 'Nymphéas' with my own eyes is always moving. Highly recommend booking ahead.

Peaceful and Inspiring

I came specifically to see the inspiration for the water lilies and the Japanese bridge. It did not disappoint. The gardens are maintained with such incredible care. Even with the summer crowds, you can find quiet corners to just sit and absorb the atmosphere. The booking process was simple and receiving the e-ticket on my phone was very convenient.

Stunning but book the first slot!

The gardens are breathtaking. An absolute 5/5 for beauty. My only advice is to book the earliest possible time slot. We arrived for our 9:30 am entry and had a glorious hour before the large tour groups descended. By 11 am, the paths were very full. Seeing the house was great, especially the yellow dining room. The skip-the-line ticket we booked here was essential.

Explosion of Spring Color!

We visited in late April and the garden was unbelievable. Tulips everywhere! It was a sea of reds, yellows, and pinks. The Japanese bridge wasn't fully covered in wisteria yet, but the beauty of the Clos Normand made up for it. Easy booking, no problems at the entrance. A perfect day.

Beautiful Autumn Visit

We were worried about visiting so late in the season, but it was wonderful. The autumn light was soft and golden, and the gardens had a different, more mellow kind of beauty. It was much less crowded than I imagine it is in summer. The process of getting tickets through our partner GetYourGuide was seamless, and the information provided was very accurate.

A Top Life Experience

I've been dreaming of visiting Giverny since I studied art history in college. It exceeded all expectations. Walking across that green bridge, seeing the light on the water... it felt sacred. Booking a tour from Paris was the right choice for us, taking all the stress out of the logistics. If you're considering it, just do it. You won't regret it.
